Why learning Arabic is obligatory

  • Rather, learning the language with the intention of understanding and spreading the religion is better than immersing itself in supererogatory prayers.
  • Some virtuous scholars have said: according to Sharia learning the language is more preferred doing Nafilah.

The obligation of learning Arabic


Al-Thaalibi, the imam of the language, said: Whoever loves Allah almighty loves His Messenger Muhammad, may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him, and whoever loves the Arab Messenger loves the Arabs, and whoever loves the Arabs will love Arabic in which the best books were revealed to the best non-Arabs and Arabs, and whoever loves Arabic is concerned with it, perseveres in it, and directs his efforts towards it, and whoever is guided by Allah For Islam, he opened his heart to faith and gave him a good understanding of it.



I believe that Muhammad, may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him, is the best of the messengers, Islam is the best of religions, the Arabs are the best of nations, and Arabic is the best of languages ​​and tongues, and the desire to understand it from the religion, as it is the tool of knowledge and the key to understanding in religion and the reason for reforming the living and the future.


Then it is for the attainment of virtues, and the containment of chivalry and other types of virtues, such as the fountain of water and the source of fire.


Imam Ibn Taymiyyah said: “The Arabic language is part of the religion, and knowing it is an obligation.


learning Arabic is an obligation for understanding the Book and the Sunnah, and it is only understood in the Arabic language, and whatever the duty is not done without it is an obligation.”


Rather, it deepens until it affects the mind, morals, and religion in a strong and clear way, and it also affects the resemblance to the first of this nation from the Companions and the Followers, and their resemblance to them increases the mind, religion and character.”



He also said: “The predecessors still hate changing the rituals of the Arabs, even in dealings, which is speaking in other than Arabic except for a need, as was stipulated by Malik, Al-Shafi’i and Ahmed. Rather Malik said: 

“Whoever speaks in our mosque other than Arabic will be removed from it” although all languages may be used, they allowed it for only some special cases of need, and they hated it for no need that's for the sake of preserving the rituals of Islam.”


He also said : “It is known that learning Arabic and teaching Arabic is an obligation upon sufficiency, and the predecessors used to discipline their children to the tune.If people were left to their tune, it would be shame and a defect.”

Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, may God have mercy on him, said: “The merit of the Qur’an is known only to the one who knows the speech of the Arabs, knows the science of language, the science of Arabic, and the science of eloquence, and he looks at the poetry of the Arabs, their sermons, and their contracts in the places of their pride, and their messages...”

Al-Farabi’s saying: “It is the language of Paradise people, and it is the clearest among the languages from every defect, and the exalted from every vile, and the tongue of the Arabs is the middle of the tongues in doctrine and the most worded.”

As for the sayings of the non-Arabs.... Among them is the saying of the German Orientalist, Doctor of Philosophy Anna Marie Schimmel, who translated the Holy Quran into German: “The Arabic language is a very musical language, and I can only say that it must be the language of heaven.” .
